INSTALLING SECURITY EQUIPMENT INTO HISTORICAL BUILDINGS: WHAT TO THINK ABOUT AND HOW TO OVERCOME THE PITFALLS
Installing security equipment in old historical buildings involves unique challenges and considerations to ensure that the integrity and aesthetics of the structure are preserved while enhancing the overall security of the building.
Automatic Systems has worked on a number of sites with these challenges and the remainder of this document details solutions to help alleviate these concerns and overcome the pitfalls.
Here are the primary physical challenges:
Fragile and Ageing Infrastructure
Delicate Materials:
Many historical buildings are constructed from materials that have become fragile over time, such as aged wood, stone, plaster, and brick, which can be easily damaged during installation. Automatic Systems products often stand on their own requiring no drilling into the walls or floors.
Aesthetic Sensitivity:
Custom Solutions: Automatic Systems manufacturers custom-designed security solutions that match the building’s style and blend seamlessly within the building’s architecture. We have an extensive range of RAL colours to choose from.
Structural Integrity
The architectural layout of historical buildings may be complex, with hidden alcoves, narrow corridors, and varying ceiling heights complicating the installation process. Historical buildings often have limited access points for bringing in installation equipment and materials, requiring careful planning.
Space Limitations:
Small rooms and narrow passageways can make it challenging to manoeuvre and install large or bulky security devices. Automatic Systems products arrive to site in kit form making it easier for manoeuvring into the correct position.
Structural Constraints
Irregularities and Non-Standard Measurements:
Old buildings often have non-standard dimensions and irregularities that make it difficult to fit modern equipment designed for standard installations. Automatic Systems has a range of products with different measurements, and as a manufacturer can design bespoke solutions to match the clients exacting standards.
Technological Constraints
Power Supply:
In general concealing wires and cables to avoid visible impact on the building’s aesthetics can be difficult, especially in walls and floors that cannot be altered.
Automatic Systems offers a bespoke plinth system resulting in less disruption to the floor, as shown in the images below:
In a lot of old buildings, the floor is very uneven. This does not pose as a problem for the installation of the equipment because they can be installed on a custom plinth or base that is specifically designed to accommodate the unevenness of the floor. By adjusting the plinth to create a level surface, the equipment can be securely placed (as shown in the image below).
Vibration
Vibration Sensitivity:
Drilling and installation activities can cause vibrations that may damage delicate structural elements or finishes. The installation of Automatic Systems equipment requires minimal drilling therefore preserving the structure.
Non-Intrusive Installation Techniques
Reversible Fixings:
Using reversible fixings that do not cause permanent damage to the building fabric is essential but can be technically challenging.
Preservation of Historical Integrity
Maintaining Aesthetics:
Ensuring that modern security equipment does not detract from the historical aesthetics requires careful selection and placement of devices.
Invisible Solutions:
Implementing security measures that are effective yet invisible or minimally visible to maintain the historical ambiance. Automatic Systems ensures that the overall look of the security solutions fit harmoniously into any environment due to the large range of customisation options available.
Addressing these physical challenges requires a combination of specialised knowledge, careful planning. By planning meticulously, using appropriate technologies, and collaborating with experts, it is possible to protect these valuable structures without compromising their character and integrity.
